The Don't Go Broke Diet encourages a well balanced nutrition plan with lean proteins, healthy fats and carbohydrates with a low glycemic load (good carbs).
Good Carbs
Good carbohydrates can be divided into four categories:
- Vegetables, such as broccoli
- Fruits, such as oranges
- Whole-grains, such as brown rice
- Hybrids, such as legumes(beans) and dairy products
Fruits
Of all the good carbs, fruits are my favorite because they:
- Are sweet and delicious
- Are portable
- Do not require cooking
- Fill me up
- Have a high fiber and water content
Apples
When discussing fruits, Apples are a great place to start. Apples taste great and are very inexpensive. They can also improve your health and help prevent diseases.
Apples are filled with phytochemicals and flavanoids. Phytochemicals and flavanoids are antioxidants. Cell and tissue damage in your body is often caused by oxidation; and antioxidants can prevent oxidation.
Benefits of apples
The antioxidants in apples may help to:
- Prevent heart diseases
- Prevent strokes
- Prevent prostate cancer
- Prevent colon cancer
- Prevent lung cancer
- Prevent respiratory diseases
- Prevent age-related memory loss
Other benefits
A medium apple has 5 grams of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber promotes weight loss by slowing your digestion and keeping you full. Dietary fiber can also help to reduce your cholesterol.
Apples have no cholesterol and no fat. I recently purchased a bag of 10 apples for $3.00. That is 30 cents an apple and they were not on sale.
Eat an apple a day to get healthy, lose weight, prevent disease and Don't Go Broke.
